NHS Blackpool

I worked in partnership with the Lancashire Infant Mortality Board to address the impact smoking in pregnancy has on the health and wellbeing of the unborn child. In Blackpool, I pioneered and designed the now evidenced based Incentive Scheme to support pregnant women to remain smoke-free during pregnancy. This has contributed to a decrease in stillbirth and improved outcomes for babies. My scheme then went on to be adopted by the Greater Manchester ICB. In Blackpool, I was instrumental in dropping the SATOD rate from 38% to 26% and in GM the rate has dropped from 12.6% to 8.7%.

Tackling Inequalities and Deprivation

This has involved designing and commissioning effective health services which comply with NICE guidance and achieve national targets. As a public health practitioner, I am fully aware of all health and wellbeing issues, the driving principals of healthy lifestyles in relation to impact of deprivation and reducing inequalities in health. Key experiences include overcoming bureaucratic apathy, identifying champions within services who can drive a cause, enabling community leaders and mediating conflict.
